“Bury your head in the sand” is a common saying based on the myth that when an ostrich senses danger, it buries its head, believing that if they do not see the danger, it does not exist.
Postal workers are facing great dangers from corporate, financial and political forces pulling the strings behind both the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) proposals of June 21 and the new White House Task Force report of Dec. 4 (See page 6 on the Task Force). Sticking our heads in the sand and pretending the threats do not exist will not work any better for us than for the ostrich.

Web News Article #: 5-2019On Jan. 15, President Dimondstein appointed – and the National Executive Board voted to confirm per the APWU National Constitution – Ron Suslak to the Northeast Region Coordinator position. The position became vacant with the recent retirement of John Dirzius.
Brother Suslak currently serves as the President of the Queens Area Local in New York and Vice-President of the NY State APWU.
“I welcome such a strong union leader to this position,” said Dimondstein. “The national leadership looks forward to working with Brother Suslak in the ongoing struggle to strengthen the APWU and workers’ rights.”

Web News Article #: 4-2019On Jan. 15, APWU officers and members protested with union sisters and brothers from the NALC, National Nurses United, Teamsters, the BCTGM (Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers) International Union, and SEIU outside the Canadian embassy. The “solidarity across borders” action supported our postal brothers and sisters in the Canadian Union of Postal Workers forced back to work by the Canadian government.
CUPW members were illegally forced back on the job by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government after a 37-day rotating strike across the country – a right enshrined by Canada’s Supreme Court in 2015. The CUPW remains without a contract with Canada Post – the country’s public mail operator – as mediation ended without an agreement in December 2018.

In late October, our postal brothers and sisters in the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) began rotating strikes across the country, their legal right under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (part of the country’s constitution). They struck for a better contract from Canada Post, the country’s public mail operator.
CUPW demanded that Canada Post address workplace injuries – which have increased 43 percent over the last two years due to rising parcel volumes – and stronger pay and benefits for Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers (RSMC), about 8,000 workers. CUPW also demanded the end to forced overtime, better job security, and stronger health and safety measures.

The table below indicates the date and corresponding pay period in which locals and state organizations can expect headquarters to deposit the Dues Check Off (DCO) rebate monies via Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT). 

Web News Article #: 3-2019On January 10, APWU officers and members joined hundreds of furloughed federal government employees, labor leaders, congressional representatives and other allies on the steps of the “House of Labor,” the AFL-CIO, to demand an end to the government shut down and resulting “lockout” of 800,000 federal employees.
American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) National President J. David Cox clarified, “I’d like to make sure that everyone knows that this effort and extortion is more of a lockout than a shutdown.”

Goldberg ruled that the Postal Service did not violate the National Agreement in 2011 when it decided to subcontract roof maintenance and repair work. The Union contended that the Employer had violated Article32.1.A by failing to give due consideration to the five factors it must consider before subcontracting; violated Article 32.1.B by failing to give the Union advance notice, and by failing to comply with the other requirements of 32.1.B; violated the MOU on Contracting or Insourcing of Contracted Services; and violated ASM Section 535.112.
